One word that has scared me off over the years is “hydrating” when it comes to hair care. Hydrating and nourishing hair products usually make my hair greasy quickly, which doesn’t look or feel nice. These products have typically been too rich for my fine, long hair and oily scalp.
But oily scalps still need to be healthy and hydrated. If your scalp is dry, it may actually cause an overproduction of sebum to make up for the lack of moisture, which can lead to greasy hair.
I previously tried Vegamour’s GRO range and was blown away by the results. The products made my hair thicker, fuller, and less greasy in the long term – not just straight after a shower!
In this review, I try the Vegamour HYDR-8 range. This vegan and cruelty-free collection is supposed to hydrate, cleanse, strengthen, condition, detangle, and revive dry, damaged strands for soft and shiny hair. But how effective is the Vegamour HYDR-8 range on long, fine hair and an oily scalp? I share my experience in this honest review.
Products in this review
I received the following 5 Vegamour HYDR-8 products to review:
- Hydrate and Repair Shampoo
- Hydrate and Repair Conditioner
- Weightless Repair Oil
- Deep Moisture Repair Mask
- Leave-In Conditioner
I’m diving into my thoughts on each product below before sharing my overall review of this line for oily hair.
1. Vegamour HYDR-8 Hydrate and Repair Shampoo
£38 for 236ml
The Vegamour HYDR-8 Hydrate and Repair Shampoo is designed to be ultra-hydrating, gentle, smoothing, and non-stripping for dry hair to leave it clean and fresh with a glossy shine. This shampoo features Karmatin, which is Vegamour’s vegan silk alternative to keratin and silicone that’s supposed to reduce the appearance of damaged hair.
I like this shampoo. A little bit of product goes a long way. I only needed the size of a 10p coin to lather up and fully massage my scalp. After gently massaging the shampoo into my scalp and down through the ends of my hair for 1 minute, it rinsed out easily.
The shampoo smells fantastic. It’s sweet and fresh. The texture is creamy and rich, without feeling greasy, slippery, or like silicone. It’s giving expensive vibes.
After using the shampoo, my hair feels hydrated, soft, smooth, and in great condition. It looks shiny and healthy. This shampoo doesn’t give volume or thickness, unlike other shampoos I’ve tried that are specifically geared towards oily scalps and fine hair.
This shampoo makes my hair a bit greasier than usual. The second day without washing my hair is usually when my hair starts becoming a bit greasy. But on day 2 after washing my hair with this shampoo, my hair is greasier, limper, and less voluminous than usual. It’s definitely tolerable, though, and nothing a bit of dry shampoo can’t sort out!
Rating: 4 stars
Using this shampoo when my hair is a bit drier than usual is the best option, as it gives my hair some extra hydration and leaves it in great condition. To prevent my hair from looking and feeling greasy all the time, I’ll switch between this Vegamour shampoo and an oily hair-focused shampoo for optimum results.
2. Vegamour HYDR-8 Hydrate and Repair Conditioner
£38 for 236ml
The Vegamour HYDR-8 Hydrate and Repair Conditioner claims to reduce breakage, tame frizz, deeply nourish, and deliver long-lasting hydration. It’s targeted at people with damaged or parched hair. The conditioner features Vegamour’s Karmatin.
I also really like the conditioner. Again a little bit of product goes a long way. I applied the size of a 10p coin to the ends of my hair only, left it in for 2 minutes, and then rinsed. I always focus conditioner on the ends of my hair where it’s a bit drier.
Again, the conditioner has a delightful sweet and fresh scent. It’s thicker than the shampoo and has a rich, creamy texture. The conditioner feels nourishing and luxurious.
After using the conditioner, my hair feels soft, smooth, and silky. If I’m experiencing any dryness on the ends of my hair, this helps to nourish and hydrate it. It makes my hair feel restored.
As I only use conditioner on the ends of my hair, this doesn’t contribute to my scalp becoming greasy, which is a massive bonus.
Rating: 4.5 stars
While this does a fantastic job of conditioning my hair, my hair is generally healthy and hydrated, so I can get away with using cheaper conditioners that don’t focus on repairing breakages or delivering intense moisture. This Vegamour conditioner is lovely, and I ultimately can’t fault it, but somebody with dry or damaged hair would reap the full benefits.
3. Vegamour HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil
£48 for 50ml
The Vegamour HYDR-8 Weightless Repair Oil is supposed to strengthen, smooth, and add natural shine to all hair types and textures, especially fine or thin hair. It’s enriched with a wealth of nourishing oils like marula, sacha inchi, chia seed, and moringa seed.
You use this by applying 1-3 pumps of the oil in your palms, rubbing your palms together, and then smoothing it through the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair. You can apply it to damp or dry hair. As I’ve got fine hair, I only need 1 pump of the oil. A little bit of product goes a long way, so start with 1 pump and add more if you feel your hair needs it.
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to love this hair oil as much as I do!
This smells nice. It has a vaguely sweet and slightly herbal scent. I prefer the smell of the shampoo and conditioner, but the oil is still lovely.
The texture is amazing. It’s not slippery or greasy. Instead, it feels weightless and has a runny consistency. Its texture is more similar to a serum than an oil. Because of this lightweight texture, it’s incredibly fast-absorbing and doesn’t look or feel heavy at all. On my fine hair, the oil simply helps make my hair look smooth and shiny, rather than slathered in oil.
I’ve used oils in the past that make my hair feel greasy and heavy. I also don’t enjoy the feeling of a thick oil in my hair. So this Vegamour one is a breath of fresh air, as I can’t feel the oil once it’s been applied.
I use this on dry hair, which makes it soft, moisturised, smooth, and silky. It adds a wonderful gloss to my hair and helps repair split ends. The results are instant.
Rating: 5 stars
I’ve been concentrating this oil on the mid-lengths and ends of my hair. But because it’s so weightless, I’m going to use it to tame flyaways and baby hairs around my face, as it doesn’t make my hair look greasy, so it’ll be an excellent styling product. This oil would also be great for slicking back hair for a clean girl aesthetic.
4. Vegamour HYDR-8 Deep Moisture Repair Mask
£52 for 147ml
The Vegamour HYDR-8 Deep Moisture Repair Mask is a weekly treatment that’s designed to deeply moisturise the hair, strengthen strands, improve damaged locks, tame frizz, and leave hair looking shiny and feeling silky. It’s designed for dry or damaged hair and incorporates Vegamour’s flagship Karmatin.
After shampooing hair and squeezing out any excess water, you apply this mask all over your hair, from the roots to the tips. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes and then rinse.
Out of all the products in this Vegamour HYDR-8 review, the mask smells the best. It has a strong sweet scent that’s addictive and revitalising. The mask makes my hair smell amazing.
This mask has a satisfying thick and gloopy texture. It feels luxurious and creamy. Yet, it still spreads evenly through damp hair with a bit of massaging. I found it easy to distribute the product from my scalp to the ends of my hair.
Here’s the deal with this product. It’s intensely nourishing, instantly makes hair incredibly soft and smooth, and gets rid of any dryness or damage. It also made my hair visibly glossier and silkier.
However, this makes my oily scalp noticeably oilier. I used this mask in combination with my standard oily hair shampoo to test how much of a difference this mask made to my hair, without the influence of the other hydrating Vegamour hair products in this post.
After using my hair dryer, as usual, while my hair felt softer and more nourished than normal, it also felt more weighed down and looked quite limp. The day after I washed my hair, it had become much greasier than usual.
Rating: 3 stars
This hair mask meets all its claims and is a brilliant restorative treatment. Ultimately, my oily hair can’t handle this. I’ll use it once in a blue moon if my hair requires deep hydration or has become damaged. Otherwise, this is just too much moisture for my fine hair. I definitely couldn’t get away with using this weekly.
5. Vegamour HYDR-8 Leave-In Conditioner
£34 for 147ml
The Vegamour HYD-8 Leave-In Conditioner is a lightweight spray that’s meant to hydrate, detangle, and reduce frizz for soft, silky hair. It’s geared towards people with dry or dehydrated hair and features Karmatin.
To apply this, spray a generous amount to coat damp hair, comb through, leave in, and style as usual. If you’ve got fine or oily hair, you can focus the product on the mid-lengths to the ends. I applied this conditioner all over my hair.
This leave-in conditioner smells nice, but the sweet scent is quite weak compared to the rest of the HYDR-8 line. The consistency is thin and watery, which means it’s quick and easy to spritz this all over the hair and comb it through evenly.
This spray is decent, but it didn’t blow me away. It makes my hair marginally softer and smoother. I didn’t notice any difference in my hair feeling more hydrated or looking shinier. However, a big bonus is that this conditioner doesn’t weigh my hair down or make it greasier than usual, so I can easily incorporate this into my hair care routine.
Rating: 3.5 stars
I don’t think the leave-in conditioner makes much of a difference to my fine, oily hair, but it also doesn’t cause any additional greasiness.
Does the Vegamour HYDR-8 collection work for oily hair? The verdict
Overall, I think the Vegamour HYDR-8 range can work as part of an oily hair care routine, but only if these products are cycled with other hair products for optimum hair health. The only exception is the hair mask, which I think will ultimately be too rich for oily scalps.
The Vegamour HYDR-8 range leaves hair in great condition. It makes strands hydrated, silky, smooth, and repaired while imparting glossy shine. However, using all these products every time you wash your hair will ultimately weigh fine, oily hair down and leave it greasier than usual.
But make no mistake, moisturised hair is essential for oily hair. With a bit of tailoring, the HYDR-8 line can improve the condition of your hair and leave it looking and feeling super healthy, not greasy. The hair oil is my top recommendation from this review. It’s divine.
You can buy the full Vegamour HYDR-8 kit, which includes all 5 products in this review, for £189 here.
These are expensive hair care products. However, they are truly top quality and meet all of their claims. If you’re looking for a bit of luxury and hydration, the HYDR-8 range won’t disappoint! Just use the products sparingly and not all at the same time if you’ve got an oily scalp to avoid your hair looking limp, greasy, and lifeless.
I recently tried the leave-in conditioner and have the mask waiting for me to try it – so far, I really like the conditioner. I agree with you though, I don’t really see a difference in my hair, but it smells nice!
The packaging on this range is stunning. I love the pink and gold combo. I have drier ends in general and can sometimes need a repairing mask all over, so I’d definitely go for all of these products. I’m really intrigued by the hair oil, and I actually love a herbal scent. Thanks for putting this range on my radar!
