As a blogger and content creator, photography and videography are hugely important. Strong visuals can be the difference between a piece of content going viral or not.

I don’t come from a photography background, and I’m by no means an excellent photographer. However, I’ve taken plenty of photos and videoed a lot of Instagram content over the years, so I’ve learned quite a lot about lighting, lenses, layouts, and angles. I want photography kits that are easy to use, simple to set up, and deliver great results with minimal effort.

Today, I’m reviewing the SANDMARC macro lens kit, which is designed to work with iPhones to take beautiful, close-up photos. This kit consists of the Macro 100mm Lens and the Prolight Mini Kit.

This review covers whether the SANDMARC macro lens kit is a worthy investment and showcases results using the Macro 100mm Lens and Prolight Mini kit.

About the SANDMARC macro lens kit

The SANDMARC macro lens kit claims to be premium photography gear for iPhones, designed to capture detailed, rich, and vivid close-up shots.

According to SANDMARC, this macro lens kit is ideal for beauty creators, like me. The kit consists of:

• Macro 100mm Lens: A lens designed to capture stunning close-up details with a shallow depth of field, creating a natural, organic look. The lens connects using a custom mounting system — either a fitted phone case or clip mount — allowing for alignment and stability over the phone’s camera.
• Prolight Mini Kit: Compact, wireless LED lights (Bi-Colour and RGB) designed for creators who want precise control over lighting colour, brightness, and temperature. Perfect for portraits, product shots, and more. Both lights are dimmable from 1% to 100% and run for roughly 60–90 minutes at full brightness. They recharge via USB-C.

Together, the macro lens and mini LED lights are designed to give iPhone users more control over close-up photography and lighting conditions while remaining portable and simple to set up. It’s also a lightweight, compact, and portable kit, which is perfect for content creators on the go.

Setting up the macro lens kit

The SANDMARC macro lens kit is relatively easy to set up.

The Macro 100mm Lens comes with an iPhone case, where the lens can clip onto the back of the case where the iPhone’s camera is, or you can use the clip mount in the kit, which allows you to clip the macro lens directly onto your iPhone camera or case. I’ve got an iPhone 13 Pro, so I got the corresponding case. However, the lens didn’t clip onto the case properly, so the macro lens wouldn’t work with my iPhone’s camera. Instead, I found using the clip mount directly over my iPhone 13 Pro case gave me much better results.

Here’s what the SANDMARC Macro 100mm Lens looks like when I use the clip mount on my iPhone 13 Pro (below).

The Prolight Mini Kit comes with 2 rechargeable LED lights, which are easy to set up. You can either place them down in a fixed position or you can hold them and angle them specifically how you want to for the perfect shot.

SANDMARC also offers a Universal Mount Adapter so that you can fix the LED lights directly to your iPhone. Although I don’t own this, I think this would be great for instant lighting with your iPhone to illuminate whatever you’re trying to capture.

Honest SANDMARC review

I think the SANDMARC macro lens kit is good – but not outstanding – for taking detailed, close-up shots.

The kit doesn’t come with instructions for everything. While certain things, such as setting up the LED lights, are straightforward and intutive to use, I would’ve appreciated some simple instructions for slotting the 100mm macro lens onto the dedicated iPhone 13 Pro case or on the clip mount. To me, it wasn’t obvious which camera the SANDMARC lens should mount onto out of the 3 iPhone camera lenses. I also wasn’t certain how to use the clip mount. A look on the SANDMARC website gave me the answers I was looking for, but a simple user manual would’ve made this process smoother.

The clip mount is prone to moving slightly, and you can easily knock it out of position on your iPhone camera. However, it’s easy to readjust the lens when using the clip mount, so it’s no biggie.

Now for the important part: the 100mm macro lens results. The photos below were taken in the same conditions, at the same time, using the Prolight Mini Kit RGB LED light. Below, you can see the difference in my photos between using just my iPhone 13 Pro camera and the SANDMARC Macro 100mm Lens. These photos are completely unedited and have only been cropped.

As you can see, in both of the SANDMARC macro lens pictures, there is greater detail, depth of colour, and more clarity. Especially with the r.e.m. beauty highlighter balm, the shimmer particles are sharper, and you can see the various shimmer particle colours better.

However, I don’t think the results are so wildly different that the macro lens is a complete game-changer. Admittedly, though, this could be down to my photography skills.

Overall, I think the SANDMARC macro lens kit is decent. It’s easy to use, portable, and delivers reasonable results.

Having said that, I’m not blown away by the results. I don’t think there’s a big difference between just using my iPhone 13 Pro camera vs the SANDMARC photography kit. The iPhone 13 Pro case didn’t work with the macro lens at all, which rendered it useless. I also think some clearer instructions for setting up this kit would’ve been helpful.

The verdict: If you take a lot of close-up, detailed photos or videos, the SANDMARC macro lens kit would be handy. It’s fairly pricey, but you’d get the use out of it if you shoot a lot of content, particularly as the kit is portable. However, if you don’t take many close-up photos, you don’t need this kit. Regardless, I feel that this is a nice-to-have kit, rather than a must-have kit.

Although I know other bloggers were experiencing the exact same problems, it was a difficult time for everyone in this space.

But I knew I didn’t want to give up my website, as I still enjoyed creating content. The whole reason I began my blog was to marry together my passion for writing and love for all things makeup and skincare, so I kept focusing on that. While the decrease in traffic was initially disheartening, I began re-finding my love and motivation for my blog. And in the last 4 months, my website traffic has picked up again.

Blogs with outdated themes can be an automatic turn-off for some readers. A lot of visitors will click off your blog in a matter of seconds if it’s hard to navigate, isn’t mobile responsive, or simply doesn’t look good.

5. Retake photos

If you’ve got a newer camera, purchased some imagery props recently, or your photography style has changed over the years, it’d be well worth retaking some of your shots for a speedy blog refresh.

This is especially important for older blog content that sees a lot of visitors, as attractive imagery will likely result in even more readers. You already know the content is popular, so you just need to capitalise on it.

I did this process a couple of years ago, and it made a difference. Everything looked more cohesive. There are still some posts where I need to update the imagery, but I’m working on it.

When you first start blogging, there’s a tonne to think about. SEO, writing, niches, photography, networking, promoting your content, and so much more! It’s hard to know where to start.

This blog post will tell you everything you need to know as a new blogger. These tips will set you and your blog up for success.

1. Write like you’re talking to someone

Great bloggers almost always write in a friendly, conversational manner. Do you know why? It helps build a rapport with their audience.

When someone reads their blog posts, they’re having a conversation with a good friend. Not only is this writing more personal, but it also comes across as more trustworthy.

You’re should write like you’re sharing tips, opinions and experiences with a great friend, not just some random person. Speak to the person, not at them.

2. Find a good theme

A good blogging theme should strike a delicate balance between looking great and being functional. I see so many gorgeous themes that look great on desktop PCs but just aren’t responsive on mobile. Similarly, some blog themes focus far too much on imagery, so you end up scrolling for ages just to find content.

On the flip side, if your blog theme isn’t very aesthetically pleasing, people might not be inclined to stick around for long. People are drawn to gorgeous websites, so capturing their attention from the start is very important. There are loads of aesthetic blogs out there, so if readers aren’t interested in the look of your site, they will click elsewhere.

Blending functionality and a modern design are therefore very important. Bluchic and 17th Avenue both do gorgeous, feminine and user-friendly blog themes. Otherwise, your more generic theme sites like Creative Market and ThemeForest have a huge library to pick from.

I’d strongly recommend paying for your theme so you get support and advice for any issues you run into. You won’t get the same service for a free theme.

3. Run giveaways

A tip I don’t see enough bloggers speak about is to run giveaways. They’re a great way to build your email list and connect with your audience. Depending on your reach and how much money you spend on promoting your giveaway, you could acquire hundreds of new contacts. People love giveaways, and it’s a great way to reach potential new readers.

4. Edit, edit, edit

Before you publish any of your blog posts, make sure you edit them. Not only just to check for grammatical errors and typos, but also to make sure everything reads well and flows nicely.

Sometimes I read my content back after a first draft, and I realise it’s quite repetitive. Other times I don’t answer the questions from my intro. And sometimes I think of new ideas when reading my blog post back to myself and add more content. Editing is such an important process and refines your work.

5. Read other blogs

The best way to improve your own writing is to read other blogs. It’s a chance for you to discover new writing styles, uncover different niches, and gain blog post ideas. Maybe you’ll get some new content ideas, or maybe you’ll come across a writing style that really resonates with you. All good writers are good readers.

And besides using other blogs to inform your own writing, it’s a way to connect with other bloggers. There are some amazing bloggers out there, and it’s important to connect with them. Maybe you could do some collaborative blog posts together – they’re always hella fun to do!

6. Invest in good photography

I mentioned earlier that people love good imagery. People are drawn to aesthetic blogs. They’re also more likely to share your content if your photos are stunning.

Here are some things to consider to elevate your photography:

• A digital camera, especially for detailed shots
• Ring lighting for great lighting at all times
• Stunning props, such as sunglasses, jewellery, artificial flowers, confetti etc.
• Backdrops for stunning photography

Try to publish your blog posts at the same time and on the same day. Whether you post twice a month, fortnightly, weekly, or multiple times per week, consistency is key. Your audience knows when to expect new content from you that way. Sometimes, it’s simply not doable. But keeping consistent is important when publishing content and will help you establish a loyal readership.

8. Promote your content

You’ve gone to all of the effort to create great content, and now it’s time to promote your blog posts.

Here are a few great avenues to explore:

• Twitter – There are some fab Twitter accounts dedicated to retweeting your blog tweets, such as @LovingBlogs, @allthoseblogs, @BloggersHut, @theclique_UK, etc.
• Instagram – Not so great nowadays since all of the algorithm changes (*sighs*) but a great platform to have a presence on due to the high number of active users
• Facebook – A strong platform for community building and paid content promotions to reach a new audience. Joining Facebook groups solely dedicated to promoting bloggers’ content is also another consideration
• Pinterest – A very essential platform to be on for most bloggers, as it’s great for SEO and driving traffic to your site, particularly for tips-based content, listicals, and posts you can create infographics for; these all perform very well on Pinterest
• TikTok – To help get your blog and content noticed, having a presence on TikTok is a great idea, as loads of users are on TikTok. Plus, creating trending content is always good for getting noticed

There are many creative ways to consider promoting your content. In fact, there are even dedicated websites that exist solely for the purpose of promoting blog content. However, social media platforms are where most of your users are going to be, so that’s where you should focus on promoting your blog post. Also, you can engage with your audience on social media platforms.

9. Get to grips with SEO

SEO is a blogger’s best friend. It makes your content more searchable on search engine websites like Google. And, once you get good at SEO, you can start creating content that you know will rank highly on Google.

There are heaps of great resources and courses out there to help you better understand SEO. Nele’s ‘Keyword research for bloggers’ e-course is an excellent starting point for people wanting to better understand keyword research and how to rank highly on Google.

Google Keyword Planner is also a must for you to think about what keywords to include in your blog post to boost those all-important search engine rankings. It tells you things about average monthly searches and competition, and suggests similar search terms. Although Google Keyword Planner is based on advertised content on Google, it’s still a great SEO resource.

10. Be unique

Finally, be unique. Deviate from what other bloggers are doing and explore new ideas. If you come across content that you like but can offer a different perspective on your own blog, capitalise on that!

After all, if you essentially copy the style of another blog, why would people read your content when it already exists elsewhere? Build your own writing style and blog, and work that uniqueness to your advantage.

Navigating the blogosphere can be tough. There’s so much to think about. From setting up your own website, taking photos and promoting your content across socials to securing brand collaborations, writing your own content and learning about SEO, there’s a tonne to manage.

Where do you begin? Which tools are crucial to your blog’s success?

Well, after blogging for more than 3 years and trying many different products and resources, I’m sharing 8 essential tools that every blogger needs. These tools have helped level up my photography game, driven more traffic to my blog, made my content more SEO-friendly, and kept my content calendar organised.

And I just know they’re going to be holy grail blogging tools for you too!

1. Selfie Bag*

Taking photos is great when you have your own home set-up sorted, but what about when you’re on the go and need professional shots fast? 2. Google Keyword Planner

A fantastic free tool for SEO research is Google Keyword Planner. This handy resource allows you to plug in your keywords to see how many average monthly searches the term gets (approximately), whether the competition for the keywords is high, and estimates for how much money people are willing to bid to rank for those keywords.

It’s a great way to research what keywords you’re likely to rank for. If you’re a newer blogger, ranking for a highly competitive search term with lots of average monthly searches is unlikely to yield much traffic, as your content isn’t going to sit on the first or second page of Google when bigger and more established websites are already ranking for that content. But through playing around with different search terms on Google Keyword Planner, you can strike gold with some terms that have a high number of average monthly searches and low competition.

Ahrefs has an insightful guide on how to use Google Keyword Planner, which I’d highly recommend for getting to grips with the powerful free search tool.

3. Faux flowers and plants

Fake flowers and plants are staples for any flatlay photography. Whether you want an attractive faux palm leaf for a stunning skincare aesthetic shot or gorgeous artificial cherry blossoms to nail your pink-themed lifestyle shot, buying some fake foliage will truly elevate your photography.

I typically get my artificial plants and flowers from Etsy to support small businesses, but there are many places to purchase them from. Primark, Dunelm and Next all have a great selection of faux flowers and plants available.

4. Stunning photography backgrounds

Having stunning photography backgrounds, whether for flatlay backgrounds or a backdrop, is essential for any blogger. They give you a smooth, clean base to work with.

When starting out, it’s smart to choose a simple and minimal background as you play around with different colours, textures, props, and layouts. Plain white, marble and neutral tones make for wonderful backgrounds that work with many different photos.

5. Yoast SEO

The world of SEO can be very intimidating for bloggers. There’s a lot to learn, and it can all get very in-depth and time-consuming.

Yoast SEO is a free WordPress plugin that helps ensure your blog posts are optimised to start ranking in search engines. The free version gives you cues on how SEO-friendly your title is, how strong your focus keyphrase is, how readable your content is, and more.

Yoast SEO is an absolute must for any blogger. This essential blogging tool truly makes your content better, easier to read, and more optimised.

6. A decent camera

You’ve got your stunning backdrops and pretty faux plants, so now you need a good camera. Smartphone cameras have come a long way, especially in the past 5 years, but they don’t compare to your traditional DSLR or mirrorless cameras.

You don’t have to spend loads on a good quality camera to really elevate your photography. Smartphones are great for capturing photos on the go, particularly if your blogging is very social media-focused, but they simply aren’t as good as DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. You’re not going to get the same level of detail, focus, vibrancy or control with your smartphone camera.

I’ve had my Olympus camera for a while now, and it still takes wonderful photos. For close-up details and busy shots, in particular, having a “proper camera” means all of those smaller details look sharp and maintain clarity, even when you zoom in.

I’m not suggesting that you drop £3,000 on an expensive camera that can catch up-close pictures of wildlife on the horizon. But having higher-quality photos tends to result in much more traffic. People are very drawn to attractive photos and videos, so an upgrade from your smartphone will make a big difference.

Also, playing around with DSLRs and mirrorless cameras is great fun. You can find a photography style that works for you and get creative with your images.

7. Google Analytics

And what’s the point of using wonderful free SEO tools, capturing beautiful photos, and writing engaging content if you have no idea who’s visiting your blog?

Google Analytics is a vital free tool for any blogger. It allows you to track all of your blog statistics, from how many daily page views you’re getting, what device people read your content on, how much traffic comes to your site from social media, through to the average age of your audience, where people are reading your content from, and your most viewed blog posts.

Google Analytics is incredibly comprehensive. There is even a free Google course you can take online to learn all of the ins and outs of this powerful analytics platform. It’s definitely worth taking. There’s one thing looking at your statistics, but knowing how to interpret them to make your blog more successful is a whole new skill in itself.

I know that, through Google Analytics, my traffic has continued to increase since I first started my blog back in 2018. It shows me that everything is going in the right direction!

8. Trello

The final tool that every blogger needs is Trello. Another wonderful free tool, Trello is a fantastic online management resource that allows you to put down all of your blogging tasks in one place. I use Trello to set out my content calendar, with deadlines beside each post to keep me on track; put down all of my blog post ideas as and when they pop into my head; note blogging considerations for the future; and set yearly blogging goals for myself.

As the free Trello app is just as easy to use as the desktop version, it means I can add tasks to my blogging Trello board if something pops into my head while I’m out.

You can just about do anything with Trello. It’s such a fantastic creative project management workspace. I can’t imagine my life without it now!

According to Feedspot, this list of the best UK skincare websites is ranked by traffic, social media followers, domain authority and freshness from thousands of blogs on the internet. This post is a bit of a shameless self-plug, but I’m not always great at celebrating my own successes, so I wanted to share this amazing blog achievement with you all.

I’ve somehow managed to get my blog on the same list as legendary aesthetician Caroline Hirons, who is 100% my favourite person in the skincare space. Caroline and her blog have inspired me – and so many others – to learn more about my own skin, different ingredients, and different products. This is a major ‘pinch me’ moment. Like, am I dreaming?!

Since I launched A Woman’s Confidence over 3 years ago, so many awesome things have happened. I’ve managed to connect with lots of other beauty bloggers, who are just as passionate about writing and makeup and skincare as me. It’s been wonderful e-meeting lots of other like-minded people, who have the same goals as me.

If you’re trying to grow a blog, chances are you’re monetising with affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing is when you send your site visitors to a retailer like Amazon in exchange for a commission. 

When you are an affiliate marketer, you have to worry about a lot of things at once. Link management, display boxes, conversion rate, out-of-stock items; it all can start to pile up. Luckily, there is a new WordPress plugin designed to help you with all of it.

What is Lasso?

Lasso is an all-in-one WordPress plugin that lets you create custom product displays while tracking and managing all of your affiliate links from a single dashboard.

In addition to creating great displays for your affiliate offers, Lasso allows you to:

• Track clicks with Google Analytics
• Easily replace unavailable products with other offers
• Find new income opportunities

We’ll get into all of that in a little bit, but first, let’s look at how to use Lasso.

How to use the Lasso WordPress plugin

Get started

The first thing you’ll need to do is create an account on the Lasso website. Once you’ve signed up, you can download the plugin from your account page.

Once you’ve downloaded the plugin, go to your WordPress dashboard and click Plugin > Add New > Upload Plugin.

Choose the zip file you downloaded from your account page, and click Install Now. Once the page loads, click Activate Plugin.

Once your plugin activates, go to the Lasso plugin settings (located in your WordPress sidebar). Paste the license key from your Lasso Account Details page, click Activate, and you’re ready to go!

Configure settings

After you’ve installed Lasso, you’ll need to spend some time getting the settings the way you want. 

From the general settings page, you can input a Tracking-ID for Google Analytics, and set up your link-cloaking preferences. 

Then go to the Amazon tab and input your affiliate ID and API credentials. You can get those credentials from your Amazon Associate account. API credentials are important because they allow you to pull product images and prices automatically.

Finally, go to the display settings and design your product boxes. This is the part where you get to have fun and be creative. 

Import existing affiliate links

If you’re already using an affiliate plugin, you’ll probably want to import your existing links. Click on the Lasso tab in the sidebar of your WordPress dashboard, then select Import from the dropdown menu. 

In case you’re just giving the plugin a try, you can import links one at a time. That way if you don’t like the plugin you can just switch back.

Once you’re ready to switch completely, you can do a bulk import of all the affiliate links on your site.

Add new affiliate links

To add new affiliate links, you just go to your Lasso dashboard and click Add New Link. Then paste any affiliate link or Amazon link, and the plugin will take care of the rest. You can customise your display, and when you’re satisfied just copy the shortcode and paste it into your posts.

When you are an Amazon Associate, you have a limited number of tags to give your affiliate links. It’s just unrealistic to track performance this way.

After you connect Lasso to your Google Analytics account, Google will monitor how many clicks each of your links gets. Then, you just go to your analytics dashboard and click Behavior>Events>Top Events/Pages to see how your affiliate links are performing.

Will Lasso slow down my site?

No, Lasso will not slow down your site. Lasso is a very lightweight plugin. It is around 10 megabytes in size, doesn’t load any external scripts, and it runs on its own servers. That means it won’t take any of your resources to run the plugin.

Will Lasso affect my rankings?

At the very least, Lasso won’t negatively affect your rankings in search engines. It doesn’t affect Google’s Core Web Vitals scores, and it doesn’t affect page speed.

Lasso’s display boxes could increase time on page, which could result in increased rankings, but results may vary.

Can I use Lasso with any WordPress theme?

Yes, Lasso works with any WordPress theme, and you can customise it to fit your site’s overall design.

Amazon Associates is a popular affiliate program because it converts well, but it has a reputation for slashing fees and working against content creators.
