<p>Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that causes redness, usually on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. Your skin may feel warm, hot, or even tender to the touch, and you might notice small red pimples or visible blood vessels.</p>



<p>Flare-ups can be frustrating: sometimes they appear for just a few minutes, other times they linger for hours — or even leave behind persistent redness. If you’ve got rosacea, you’ve probably experienced the sting of certain skincare products during a flare-up.</p>



<p>Common triggers include alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks, sunlight, temperature changes, exercise, and stress, according to the <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/rosacea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHS</a>. Personally, I notice my rosacea flares whenever I get warm, whether it’s from central heating, hot weather, or getting flustered. It’s uncomfortable, making my skin red, hot, and irritated.</p>



<p>The good news? While rosacea isn’t curable, the right skincare ingredients can calm redness, ease flare-ups, and strengthen your skin. Below, I’ve rounded up the best ingredients that help manage rosacea and keep your skin looking and feeling calmer.</p>

The <a href="https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/rosacea/treatment/diagnosis-treat" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Academy of Dermatology</a> recommends azelaic acid gel or foam as a proven treatment for rosacea, as it helps reduce both inflammation and long-standing redness.</p>



<p>It can also fade skin discolouration and acne marks, and reduce the appearance of blemishes. Overall, azelaic acid supports healthy-looking, smooth, and calm skin. A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16209160/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology</a> found that a niacinamide-containing moisturiser improved barrier function and clinical signs of rosacea after just 4 weeks of use. Niacinamide is a fantastic ingredient to introduce into your skincare routine, whether or not you have rosacea, as it helps ease skin irritation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Centella asiatica </h3>



<p>Centella asiatica is one of the best soothing ingredients on the market. If you experience a rosacea flare-up and your skin feels warm, inflamed, or appears red, this powerful ingredient can help alleviate these issues.</p>



<p>In addition to its calming properties, centella asiatica hydrates skin and can help repair a damaged skin barrier, making it a great ingredient for sensitive and rosacea-prone skin.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mineral sunscreen filters</h3>



<p>Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the 2 mineral sunscreen filters available on the market, are great for rosacea, as they’re typically less irritating than chemical sunscreen filters.</p>



<p>It’s incredibly important to keep your skin protected from UV rays at any time of year and for all skin types. According to the <a href="https://www.rosacea.org/rosacea-review/1999/summer/sunscreens-protect-against-no-1-rosacea-trigger?" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Rosacea Society</a>, daily sunscreen use is one of the most effective ways to prevent flare-ups and protect skin. Avoiding sun damage is especially important after a flare-up, as sunburn can worsen irritation and long-term redness.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ceramides</h3>



<p>If you want a strong skin barrier, youthful skin, and lasting hydration, ceramides are fantastic. By boosting the skin&#8217;s barrier, ceramides help lock in moisture, enhance elasticity, and provide protection from irritation, which is particularly beneficial for rosacea-prone skin. Any ingredient that calms irritation and keeps the skin supple and healthy is always a great option for rosacea. </p>



<p>The 3 most common types of ceramides are ceramide EOS, ceramide NP, and ceramide AP, so look out for these on a product&#8217;s INCI list. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Aloe vera</h3>



<p>You’ve most likely heard of aloe vera, and it’s a great soothing and refreshing ingredient for rosacea. According to a <a href="https://www.jdermis.com/articles/epidermal-skin-barrier-and-skin-care-in-rosacea-a-narrative-review.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review in the Journal of Dermis</a>, aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and soothing effects in rosacea and other inflammatory skin conditions.</p>



<p>It delivers a cooling and refreshing sensation when applied topically, which provides welcome relief if you have a flare-up.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Vitamin C</h3>



<p>Vitamin C is a good ingredient for rosacea as it has anti-inflammatory properties, which could help reduce some rosacea triggers, according to <a href="https://www.paulaschoice.co.uk/rosacea-treatment#8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paula&#8217;s Choice</a>. <p>Often dubbed as a hydration hero, hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular skincare ingredients. Hyaluronic acid&#8217;s benefits are that it&#8217;s hydrating, makes skin look plump and dewy, and promotes skin elasticity. This ingredient naturally occurs in our own bodies, as it can be found throughout the body’s connective tissue.</p>



<p>It&#8217;s a humectant, meaning it retains or preserves moisture, and can astonishingly hold onto 1000x its weight in moisture. Humectants also draw moisture from their surroundings, so it&#8217;s most effective to apply hyaluronic acid serums &#8211; where hyaluronic acid is high up the INCI list &#8211; to damp skin.</p>



<p>Hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient in many moisturisers and a lot of other products that promise intense hydration. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Vitamin C </h2>



<p>Vitamin C is one of the most popular skincare ingredients ever. It offers a myriad of benefits and is incredibly versatile. Plus, it has a tonne of research backing it up, so we know this ingredient works! It&#8217;s a dermatologist fave.</p>



<p>Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, make skin look brighter, even out complexion, increase the effectiveness of sunscreens, and provide protection against pollution, environmental damage, and sun damage.&nbsp;It can even improve the appearance of wrinkles and reduce redness.</p>



<p>There are many forms of vitamin C, but the most potent and well-researched form is ascorbic acid (AKA l-ascorbic acid). </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Glycolic acid </h2>



<p>The most popular of all exfoliating acids is glycolic acid. It&#8217;s a plant-derived alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), and it contains the smallest-sized molecules in AHAs, meaning it can more deeply penetrate the skin. Glycolic acid aids in collagen production and exfoliates the skin by increasing cell turnover (so that it sheds dead skin cells faster than usual), evening skin tone, and reducing wrinkles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The result is a smoother and more even complexion. However, if overused, it can aggravate the skin and start to damage the skin&#8217;s barrier. For my rosacea-prone skin, I only use glycolic acid once a week max. Typically, I use it fortnightly. </p>



<p>It also increases sensitivity to the sun, so you must wear sunscreen following using glycolic acid. Although, we should wear SPF all year, regardless of the weather, to ensure proper protection from UV rays.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Squalane</h2>



<p>Squalane has become quite a popular ingredient in recent times, which is an excellent emollient, meaning it softens or soothes skin. This ingredient delivers nourishment and prevents moisture loss, while restoring skin suppleness. Despite having quite an oily consistency, it&#8217;s surprisingly lightweight, absorbent, and non-greasy on the skin. </p>



<p>Dare I say that squalane might be my fave hydrating ingredient? My skin loves this stuff. It makes my skin noticeably softer, smoother, and more moisturised. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. Retinol</h2>



<p>AKA vitamin A, retinol is one of the most popular skincare ingredients. It&#8217;s often considered the &#8220;gold standard&#8221; in skincare, thanks to its raft of powerful and proven benefits. </p>



<p>Retinol reduces fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen. It can also fade dark spots and improve uneven skin texture. Although it can take three months to one year to see improvements in fine lines and wrinkles, vitamin A is undisputedly the best anti-ageing ingredient, as it&#8217;s the only one that can help <em>reverse </em>the signs of ageing. SPF, on the other hand, <em>prevents</em> signs of ageing, as the protection slows down the process of getting wrinkles and fine lines.</p>



<p>However, retinol is very strong and can be quite sensitising, even at low percentages in skincare formulas. It&#8217;s best to build up a tolerance by only applying it once a week and gradually working your way up to two, three, four, etc. days. For more mature skin, retinol can actually be used every day once a tolerance has been built up. In the early stages of applying retinol, you can &#8220;buffer&#8221; the skin, by applying a thin layer of moisturiser first followed by vitamin A to make the effects less &#8220;harsh&#8221;. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Ceramides</h2>



<p>Ceramides are fats that naturally occur in your skin. They help protect skin against environmental aggressors, prevent moisture loss, and help it look younger. As skin gets older, it produces fewer and lesser-quality ceramides, making it less supple, which can lead to a damaged skin barrier alongside dryness and irritation. </p>



<p>That&#8217;s where ceramides come in. They can help restore skin and ensure it&#8217;s moisturised and healthy. Ceramides are often found in barrier repair products. The skin&#8217;s barrier can become damaged through things like over-exfoliation, applying too much retinol, and being exposed to a harsh climate. While not everyone needs to use ceramides, they support healthy-looking and -feeling skin.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7. Salicylic acid</h2>



<p>Another popular exfoliating skincare ingredient is salicylic acid. This is the only beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and functions quite differently from AHAs. It can more easily get deep into pores, which is why this is often hailed an acne and oily-skin hero. </p>



<p>Salicylic acid exfoliates the skin, giving it an overall smoother texture, and can help unclog pores, meaning it can shift stubborn blackheads and whiteheads. In fact, salicylic acid can even help reduce excess sebum production in the skin, so that the skin overall is less oily. All of these benefits can help reduce breakouts in the future.</p>



<p>As with any exfoliating ingredient, salicylic acid can be sensitising. Overxfoliation can also lead to a damaged skin barrier and redness. It&#8217;s important to go easy on the exfoliation, particularly if you have more sensitive skin. Again, I typically only use salicylic acid on my rosacea- and oily-prone skin once a week max. But my skin loves salicylic acid. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8. Niacinamide</h2>



<p>One of the most versatile skincare ingredients is niacinamide. This popular ingredient offers a plethora of benefits and is truly a powerhouse. It&#8217;d almost be easier to say what niacinamide <em>can&#8217;t </em>do.</p>



<p>Niacinamide visibly minimises enlarged pores, tightens lax pores, improves uneven skin tone, softens fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes dullness, and strengthens a weakened surface. It can even help regulate sebum production in the skin so it&#8217;s less oily and support the skin&#8217;s barrier. Plus, it&#8217;s not a sensitising ingredient and works for all skin types.</p>

<p>Another ingredient that naturally occurs in the skin is peptides. They&#8217;re short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks of proteins such as collagen, elastin, and keratin. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Can I use makeup if I have acne?&nbsp;</h2>



<p>I love this question because most women are surprised by my answer. In my scientific opinion and years of experience working with women who are struggling with acne, the right makeup can actually help you get rid of breakouts faster. But the important part is that this needs to be the right makeup.</p>



<p>The wrong makeup, just like the wrong skincare, can definitely aggravate existing acne and also be the sole cause of new breakouts.</p>



<p>That’s because certain kinds of makeup (comedogenic makeup and makeup using certain oils) can block pores and fuel your skin’s growth of acne bacteria. In cosmetic science, we call this kind of acne <em>acne cosmetica</em> – meaning a kind of acne that’s caused by cosmetics.</p>



<p>However, the exciting bit is the right makeup can actually help heal your skin from acne. It works because when you have acne and breakouts something called your skin barrier is poorly.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Your skin barrier works like a shield to keep bacteria out of your pores. When your skin barrier is poorly, the wrong bacteria start overgrowing and initial acne infections become swollen with secondary infections. This looks like cystic acne or red and swollen whiteheads.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Makeup can help prevent swollen, angry acne because makeup is designed to stay on the very top layers of your skin. And as a happy consequence, this now means your skin has an extra temporary shield. A breathable barrier. A protector.</p>



<p>This shield is not pore-blocking if it’s staying in the top layers of your skin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why does my acne get worse before my period?</h2>



<p>The biggest cause of pre-period acne is the humungous drop in estrogen, which begins 7 days before you bleed.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Estrogen is such a yummy hormone for your skin. Not only does it help your skin resist wrinkles and fine lines, help plump your skin, and help hydrate your skin, but it also counteracts the impact of androgens on your skin. These androgen hormones are the most common cause of breakouts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Estrogen sits on the other side of your hormonal see-saw. However, when estrogen hormones go MIA 7 days before your period, the impact of androgens like testosterone is amplified.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is the most commonly known cause of period acne.</p>



<p>What most women don’t know is you can easily prevent pre-period breakouts – you really can. The simplest and most impactful way is by making key changes to your diet. It works because of this big fact; certain foods you eat tell your ovaries to make more androgens.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This can be heightening androgen levels just before you get your period meaning your acne’s getting significantly worse just before your period.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Does diet affect acne?</h2>



<p>Oh heck yes, it does. Certain types of food for many women are a big trigger for acne because some foods tell your skin’s oil-making cells to grow.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Having oily skin makes your skin prone to acne because acne bacteria thrive in oil-filled pores.</p>



<p>It’s why ‘drying’ skincare can temporarily help you get rid of acne… but don’t use it. <a href="https://www.honestyforyourskin.co.uk/mario-badescu-drying-lotion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Drying skincare wrecks your skin’s long term health</a>.</p>

<p>Do you see how in photo B the red cells are bulging, exploding, and growing?</p>



<p>The big difference between these photos is cells in photo B have been hyperstimulated by a hormone some foods cause your body to release bucket loads of. This is a big trigger for acne breakouts.</p>



<p>To be clear, this isn’t about avoiding certain foods but eating in a way that quietens this acne hormone in your body. I have a free acne diet cheatsheet <a href="https://resources.honestyforyourskin.co.uk/free-acne-diet-cheatsheet-awc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">you can download here</a> that is going to help get your sebum glands looking like photo A and therefore help calm and reduce your acne flares. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">I only get acne on my chin, what does this mean?</h2>



<p>As scientists, we know breakouts around the lower third of the face are hormonally driven. Breakouts here are a strong sign that you have hormonal acne.&nbsp;</p>



<p>I actually hate this diagnosis because for many women it feels like hormones are something they have no control over and therefore they’re going to be stuck with breakouts forever. It’s a horrible feeling.</p>



<p>It can also feel hopeless because hormone testing often shows your hormones are ‘in range’. It’s very common to have in-range hormones and still be experiencing hormonal acne.</p>

<p>As the seasons change, so do your skin&#8217;s needs. And with summer just around the corner, you should consider changing your skincare routine to ensure your skin feels comfortable during the warmer weather.</p>



<p>As someone with oily skin, there&#8217;s nothing worse than my skin feeling heavy and greasy when the sun is out. If my skincare routine isn&#8217;t lightweight, it can lead to oilier, more congested skin with increased breakouts. But for people with drier skin, there are still ways to lock moisture in while keeping your skin fresh during summer.</p>



<p>Keep reading for 6 simple ways to change your skincare routine during summer for healthy, happy, and comfortable skin. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. SPF, SPF, SPF</h2>



<p>You should wear a dedicated SPF all year round. But it&#8217;s even more important to keep up with your SPF during summer when the sun is out for longer and the UV rays are stronger. This means applying and reapplying SPF throughout the day. </p>



<p>If you currently use an SPF30, switch it to an SPF50 for optimum sun protection. Reapply SPF every couple of hours, especially when you&#8217;re outside but even when you&#8217;re indoors, to avoid any sun damage. </p>



<p>If you wear makeup or want SPF reapplication to be as convenient as possible, why not try an SPF spray? You can spray it on top of makeup or simply on the go without worrying about blending a liquid into your skin. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Lighter moisturiser</h2>



<p>In the summer, our skin stays more moist, as we&#8217;re not stuck around central heating and we sweat more. For this reason, it&#8217;s best to opt for a more lightweight moisturiser to ensure our skin doesn&#8217;t become clogged or feel heavy. It also feels more comfortable.</p>



<p>For really oily skin, you might be able to skip moisturiser altogether if you use a hydrating serum or a dedicated SPF that&#8217;s got moisturising ingredients. Otherwise, it&#8217;s good to switch to gel moisturisers, as they&#8217;re lighter. <a href="https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/glow-recipe-watermelon-glow-pink-juice-moisturizer/13317614.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer</a> is lightweight, dewy, and hydrating, which is ideal for the summer.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;ve got drier skin, you may still want to stick to a cream moisturiser, but you can just go for a lighter formula. <a href="https://www.cultbeauty.co.uk/ren-clean-skincare-evercalm-global-protection-day-cream-50ml/10872940.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">REN Clean Skincare Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream</a> is a great option.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Switch cleansers</h2>



<p>Another easy way to keep your skincare routine light and fresh for summer is to switch your cleansers to less rich options. </p>



<p>Try changing your morning and second cleansers to gel cleansers. Although vitamin C can be used all year round, it particularly shines during the summer. <p>Face oils are a fantastic and decadent way of getting extra moisture into your skin. However, during the summer, they might start to feel too heavy and lead to breakouts.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;ve got oily skin, you might want to consider ditching face oils altogether. Or at least only use a little bit of product every few days, rather than daily, to avoid feeling greasy.</p>



<p>If you&#8217;ve got dry skin, you may still rely on face oils to give your skin a nourishing boost in the summer. <p>If there&#8217;s ever a time to double cleanse in your skincare routine, it&#8217;s in the summer. Naturally, your skin is going to be greasier due to sweating more. And all of that sweat must be removed. Especially if you&#8217;re wearing makeup as well. Otherwise, you&#8217;re just asking for congested skin!</p>



<p>As mentioned previously, you should keep reapplying SPF throughout the day. SPF is designed to cling to the skin. If you&#8217;ve layered SPF throughout the day, this needs to be properly removed.</p>



<p>Start off with a light cleansing balm, butter, milk, or oil to remove any makeup, SPF, skincare, and grease. Then follow with a light cleanser, usually a gel cleanser, to remove any trace of the first cleanse. You should be left with clean, refreshed, and hydrated skin.</p>
