For those of you that don’t know, I have suffered since forever with greasy hair. On the day after showering, my hair goes really oily and limp. On bad days, it can even get greasy on the same day as showering!
I have used dry shampoo for a long time now, as I find it gets rid of the chip-pan look and helps give my hair a bit of volume and texture at the same time.
However, I find that if I use it too often, it can make my scalp feel really sensitive and itchy. It leaves a load of dust all over my room too, which is not cute. Plus, I go through cans easily and find that they don’t last very long either.
One of my friends recommended that I used talcum powder as an alternative, so I decided to give it a go as nothing else has ever combatted the grease.
Known for absorbing moisture, it made sense that talcum powder would help get rid of the oil build up in my hair.
Where to buy
I picked up some baby talc from Boots, which only costs £1.60 for a really big bottle (500g). If it didn’t work out, it’s hardly like I was going to lose out on a lot of money.
Using the product
I start off by pouring out a little bit of the baby talc into my hands (beware though, the holes at the top are pretty big so a lot can come out). I then rub my hands together and run my hands through my hair so the powder spreads out evenly.
And you know what, it works really well. When I first tried it out, I was impressed by how well it seemed to take away the grease.
The only thing I will say, though, is that this shit is messy. So, you definitely don’t want to be pouring it straight onto your head as it will get everywhere. You also might want to wrap a towel around you, so the talc doesn’t get all over your clothes.
As it’s messy, I find myself still using dry shampoo when I’m in a rush to avoid getting it everywhere.
I’m really happy my friend told me about using talcum powder because it’s a very cheap way to remove the grease.
For me, this works better than dry shampoo and it doesn’t leave my scalp feeling itchy afterwards.
But it definitely is a lot messier and if you put too much in your hair, it can feel ridden with powder and looks white and dusty (although, this can happen with too much dry shampoo).

Whilst I prefer it to dry shampoo, talc can leave such a mess and isn’t great when you’re in a rush (although if you’re a neat person, you’ll probably be fine).
But for people sick of using dry shampoo and wanting to try something new to get rid of their grease, I’d recommend trying this out. If it’s not for you, you’ve literally only lost a couple of pounds and you can use the talc for something else instead.
